Why donate to the LdSH(RC) Regimental Society?
In 1974, the need for an organization dedicated to the preservation of the history and traditions of Lord Strathcona's Horse (Royal Canadians) Regiment was realized. A registered charity in the Province of Alberta, the Regimental Society protects and preserves Regimental historical artifacts and property, provides social support to Regimental members and their families, and promotes the Regiment’s heritage and traditions both within the Regimental Family and Alberta. Our Society activities benefit Canadians through the following:
- Regimental Museum and Archives. Housed in the world class “The Military Museums (TMM),” the Regimental Museum and Archives are key to protecting and promoting the Regiment’s history and heritage and assisting public and school educational programs through participation in the many TMM outreach initiatives.
- Historical Vehicle Troop. Established in 1990, the Historical Vehicle Troop is a working collection of vintage military vehicles used by LdSH (RC) throughout its history. Staffed by volunteers who are full-time Regimental soldiers, the collection of tanks, scout cars, and other combat vehicles are restored and maintained, many in operating condition, to actively display the Regiment’s history of military service to Canada. These vehicles are utilized in parades, celebrations and other charities’ fundraising events that support our communities and raise awareness of the Regiment's deep connections with the Province of Alberta.
- Pipes and Drums Band. We trace the roots of Scottish tradition through our founder Donald Alexander Smith. Formed in 1998, the band is manned by Strathconas and community volunteers, performing at Regimental events, community parades and events across Alberta.
- CPKC / Strathcona Student Scholarship Program. In partnership with Canadian Pacific Kansas City Railway (CPKC), this scholarship program for children or partners of Strathconas and Strathcona soldiers moving from military service to civilian life offers subsidies for enrolment in educational programs at the post-secondary level.
- Support to Youth Leadership Program. The Royal Canadian Army Cadets, a national youth development program, boasts approximately 20,000 young men and women between 12 and 18 years of age. The Strathcona’s are very proud to support six Royal Canadian Army Cadet (RCAC) Corps who are affiliated with the Regiment. The Regimental Society support this exceptional youth leadership program by assisting their training activities.
- Cooperation with Veteran Support Charities. Unfortunately, all soldiers face the possibility of long-term physical and mental injuries. While the Regiment and Society work hard to care for its own, the challenge is great, so the Society also supports trusted organizations dedicated to the recovery of our wounded.
