Senior Serving Strathcona

Lieutenant-General Derek (Max) Macaulay has served Canada for more than three decades, contributing to national defence and supporting Canada’s efforts to promote stability and cooperation in regions vital to Canadian security and prosperity.

An Armour Officer from Lord Strathcona’s Horse (Royal Canadians), he has been privileged to hold a range of leadership and staff roles across the Canadian Army and within multinational organizations, including having commanded The Strathconas and the 5th Canadian Division (Mighty Maroon Machine), as well as senior appointments as Vice Director Operations United States Central Command, Deputy Commander United Nations Command (Korea), NATO, coalition partners, and key domestic operations.

Throughout his career, he has worked to strengthen Canada’s partnerships, reinforce collective deterrence, and uphold the principles, norms, and institutions that govern international relations and collective security. He remains committed to fostering teamwork, advancing interoperability with like-minded nations, and ensuring Canada continues to make a constructive, reliable contribution to global peace and security. He holds master’s degrees from the Royal Military College of Canada and the United States Army War College.

He is married, and he and his wife are the proud parents of a creative and spirited daughter.
