Major M. TimmsOfficer Commanding HQ SquadronMajor Mike Timms enrolled as an Armoured Officer in March 2007, and was trade qualified and posted to Lord Strathcona’s Horse (Royal Canadians) in December 2008. He initially served as the unit Assistant Adjutant, before assuming command of 2nd Troop A Squadron in March 2009. He complete the road to war and deployed with A Squadron as a tank troop leader to Afghanistan as part of the 1 Royal Canadian Regiment Battle Group for Task Force 1-10. Upon return he served as the Squadron’s acting Second in Command from January to August 2011, following which he undertook a yearlong second language course. In May 2012, Major Timms was posted to Land Forces Western Area Headquarters as the Personal Assistant to the Command. In August 2013, he assumed the staff position of G37 Individual Training at the same headquarters, before completing the Army Operations Course in the Winter of 2014. In May 2014, he returned to Lord Strathcona’s Horse (Royal Canadians) as the Battle Captain for B Squadron, which embarked on the Road to High Readiness as part of 5e Groupe-brigade mécanisé du Canada. The following year, he served as the Second in Command of B Squadron, which again completed the RTHR as part of 1 Canadian Mechanized Brigade Group. In June 2016, Major Timms became the Strathcona’s Adjutant. In March 2017, he deployed to Ukraine on Operation UNIFIER with the unit’s HQ as the Task Force UNIFIER J1 / Adjutant. Upon return in September 2017, he was posted to Headquarters 1 Canadian Mechanized Brigade Group as the G3 Training. He was promoted to the rank of major in June 2018 and posted to 3rd Canadian Division Headquarters as the G37. In June 2019, he returned to the Strathcona’s as Officer Commanding, B Squadron, prior to deploying with the Regiment on Operation REASSURANCE, Latvia, as Officer Commanding, Multinational Combat Service Support Company. Upon return from deployment in July 2020, he assumed his current role as Officer Commanding Headquarters Squadron. Major Timms attended the aviation program at Red Deer College prior to enrolling in the Canadian Army as an Armoured Officer under the Continuing Education Officer Training Program. He completed Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration and Management via distance learning from Royal Military College. He and his wife Cassandra have two children. Their son Arthur is four years old and their daughter Grace is two year old. Where work and parenting duties permit, his hobbies include hockey, carpentry, fishing, hunting, and flying. |
