Captain V. Vahal

Captain Varun Vahal joined the Canadian Armed Forces under the Regular Officer Training Program in May 2006. After completing the Armoured Reconnaissance Troop Leader Course in August 2010 at the Royal Canadian Armour Corps School (RCACS), he was promoted to the rank of Second Lieutenant, and posted to the Lord Strathcona’s Horse (Royal Canadians).
At the Regiment, Captain Vahal was employed in various staff positions, and eventually promoted to Lieutenant in January 2011. He attended the Tank Commander Course and was promoted to Captain in June 2011. This was followed by a year as troop leader of 1st Troop, B Squadron. In 2012, Captain Vahal attended the Army Direct Fire Specialist Course and the Army Tactical Operations Course at Combat Training Center Gagetown. He finished his first posting to the Regiment in the summer of 2013 as Administration Officer, Headquarters Squadron.
Leaving the Regiment, Captain Vahal was posted to the Department of Applied Military Science, Royal Military College of Canada to attend the year-long Army Technical Staff Officer Course. This was followed by a posting to Directorate Land Requirements in Ottawa as the Project Director of the Leopard 2 Project.
After two years in Ottawa, Captain Vahal had the privilege to return to the Regiment for a second tour in the summer of 2016, where he was employed as the Assistant Operations Officer for the first year. During this time, he attended the Army Operations Course at the Canadian Army Command and Staff College in Kingston. Upon return from Kingston, Captain Vahal was appointed Battle Captain of A Squadron on the road to high readiness from June 2017 to June 2018. This was followed by a change in appointment to Second-in-Command of A Squadron where he deployed to UKRAINE for 7 months as a member of Taskforce UNIFIER Rotation 6. On 3 June 2019, Captain Vahal began his current appointment as Second-in-Command of Headquarters Squadron.
