1292 Calgary Cadet Corps

Calgary, Alberta

Visit the 1292 Army Cadet Support Society Website

A Calgary cadet corps, 1292 is one of oldest Army Cadets Corps in Alberta. The Corps was originally designated the Alberta Military Institute Cadet Corps when it was formed on 22 March 1926. Following the Second World War n 17 May 1947, the Corps was renamed "The Alberta United Services Institute Squadron (Lord Strathcona's Horse (Royal Canadians))". In 1950 the Corps was incorporated into 2376 Calgary Cadet Corps as A Squadron of the Battalion where it remained until 1955. The affiliation to the Corps remained active as the Regiment continued to directly sponsor A Squadron during this time. Originally only fourteen strong, the strength of the Squadron rose to almost sixty cadets when it was reformed as 1292 Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps (Lord Strathcona's Horse (Royal Canadians)) on 8 February 1955.

Today, the Corps parades out of the General Sir Arthur Currie Building at 4225 Crowchild Trail SW in Calgary. At about 84 cadets strong the Corps continues to grow in numbers. An extremely active Corps, they pride themselves on participating in more field exercises and activities than almost any other Corps in Alberta.

The Cadets at 1292 do a great job in representing the Corps as one of the top youth groups in Southern Alberta. 1292 Cadets have participated strongly in competitions and volunteer opportunities over the years. Teams have performed to high standards in marksmanship, Army Cadet Challenge, Sports & Fitness and Drill Competitions. Recent accomplishments of the Cadets at 1292 have been to win the 2014 Kozar Cup Drill Competition, Top Drill Commander (Kozar Cup 2014 & 2015 and the Speilman Cup 2014) and Army Cadet Challenge-Alberta in 2011. In June of 2014 we were recognized as the "Top Army Cadet Corps in Southern Alberta". Cadets regularly volunteer for the Royal Canadian Legion for Poppy Drives and event volunteers at RCL #285 in Calgary.

In the spring of 2014 several Cadets and Officers traveled to Italy and France as part of the D-Day 70th Anniversary and Italian Campaign tour at Monte Cassino. It was a great opportunity with several of the Cadets participating in the events at Monte Cassino, Beny-sur-Mer and Juno Beach.

The Corps knows the importance that the Army Cadet program is to the development of today youth. The Cadets continue to place high in star level qualifications and summer training opportunities. Several senior Cadets have participated in Advanced Training such as Exchanges and Parachute Training. A few recent successes are MWO Braydon Rattai participating in Maple Leaf in Scotland in 2015, MWO Patrick Curtis participating in Outward Bound Wales in 2014 and CWO Work being selected for Parachute Training in 2014.

The Cadets look forward to the opportunity to visit the Regiment every year and appreciate greatly the strong supported from the Regiment. We also appreciate the wonderful support from the King’s Own Calgary Regiment, a Primary Reserve Regiment in Calgary.
