Veterans Night and Remembrance Day
By: Warrant Officer Marvin MacNeill
On the evening of 9 Nov 12, the Strathcona’s Pipes and Drums were honoured to be invited to perform for the 6th Annual Veterans night at the Edmonton Garrison Warrant Officer’s and Sergeant’s Mess. This event allows all veterans, from serving members to retired members, from the Edmonton area to enjoy an evening of local entertainment and to meet up with past and present members to celebrate a night and to tell the odd ‘war story’. This year saw, for the first time, performances by the Regimental Band as well as the Edmonton City Police Pipes and Drums, the Edmonton Girls Pipe Band, The Pipes and Drums from the Royal Canadian Artillery Band, as well as a performance by the Loyal Edmonton Regiment Drum Line.
On Remembrance Day, the Strathcona’s Pipes and Drums were officially invited to Branch 175 Kingsway Legion to take part in the ribbon cutting ceremony for the new opening of the branch. During the course of the day, the band played entertainment pieces for the packed crowd of serving and retires members as well as the numerous civilian members in attendance. We were extremely honoured and privileged to have the President of Branch 175 Mr. “Mac” Torrie, make the announcement that the Strathcona’s Pipes and Drums are now the official band of the Kingsway Legion. We thank all members of the branch for allowing us to be part of their Legion family and hope that we can continue this partnership for years to come.
