Strathcona’s on the Garrison Curling Team take Gold!
Lieutenant D. Wright
After winning Gold on Exercise STRONG CONTENDER 14 and the positive win ratio during intersection regular season play, the LdSH(RC) Curling ‘A Team’ had high expectations and were favourites heading into Base Playdowns March 4-6. The ‘A Team’consisted of Lieutenant David Wright (A Sqn), Sergeant Bryson Murphy (B Sqn), and Master Corporal Paul Fisher (Recce Sqn). With our veteran player, Corporal Corinna Skinner (HQ Sqn) on her Primary Leadership Qualification course and remaining Regimental curlers playing for the LdSH(RC) ‘B Team,’ we were honoured to be joined by a member from the 3rd Battalion Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry, Master Warrant Officer Shawn Hughes, who skipped the team through the Base Playdowns Round-Robin. Due to various taskings, we played one curler short, yet still persevered to finish with a 4-1 record. After an unexpected, yet much congratulated win by the ‘B Team’ over a previously undefeated 4-0 team consisting of players from various units, we headed to the finals. The Finals took place on 10 March and the team, still short a player, racked up the scores, quickly taking the game 8-2 after only 6 ends and it was off to Prairie Regionals
Prairie Regionals gave the team a rare opportunity to compete at full strength. The team, now consisting of Master Warrant Officer Sean Hughes and LdSH(RC) ‘A Team,’ played through a six game Double Round-Robin as 3rd Canadian Division Support Group Edmonton Garrison Curling Team. Between games, players were able to mingle and socialize with other CAF members from Cold Lake and Winnipeg. The team played well, placing second with a 2-2 record. The gold medal game was played the morning of 20 March against a well-established team from Cold Lake. Victory came swiftly as we stole several ends, resulting in an early calling after 6 ends with a final score of 10-2. This was an amazing end to the curling season and all the players look forward to repeating their success next season.
