À Moreuil Wood, on se souvennait.
In the warmth and comfort of the Lecture Training Facility the Regiment held the annual memorial parade and service commemorating the Battle of Moreuil Wood, but the local residents in France commemorated the event on the historic battlefield.
Jean-Paul Brunel, president of the Moreuil Wood Association, was master of ceremonies and the key player in the organization and planning of the events marking the 95th anniversary of Lt Flowerdew's gallant charge.
A sombre memorial and a vigil began the day's events. The Canadian monument in the British War Cemetery was the focus of the first stage of commemorating the battle. The venue shifted to the memorial erected by Lord Strathcona's Horse (Royal Canadians) as the day progressed.
Following a brief memorial service, re-enactors and volunteers provided a visual spectacle to the public in attendance.
Historic artefacts unearthed were on display, allowing the public to get a physical sense of the tools and weapons used by soldiers during this Great War battle.
The inclusion of period uniforms and the members of the Moreuil Wood Association enabled a parade and ceremony combining the sombre military tradition with the dash and flare of a cavalry charge.
