Major M.R. ShumkaOfficer Commanding B SquadronFollowing commissioning as an Army officer in 2009 and completion of armour qualification training in 2011, Major Shumka subsequently joined Lord Strathcona’s Horse (Royal Canadians) that spring. During his first Regimental tour, he was employed as a Reconnaissance (Recce) Troop Leader in Recce Squadron. In this capacity, he deployed to the Canadian Arctic as the Armour Advisor and Recce Troop Leader within the 1 PPCLI led Battle Group as part of a Canadian domestic sovereignty Exercise (ARCTIC RAM 12). Following his Troop time, Major Shumka transitioned to the Regimental Accounts Office within Headquarters Squadron. Major Shumka returned to the Regiment in 2016 as Battle Captain B Squadron before deploying Northern Iraq as part of Operation IMPACT where he was employed within the US lead multi-national Division Headquarters as the Combine Joint Forces Land Component Command – Operation Inherent Resolve J35 Operations Officer. Upon his return to Canada, Major Shumka was employed as Squadron Second-in-Command B Squadron, the Regimental Adjutant and finally as the Deployment Officer prior to deploying as the Officer Commanding Combat Support Company with the Strathcona led Battle Group as part of Operation REASSURANCE 20-01 in Latvia. Returning for his third Regimental tour in 2022, Major Shumka assumed his most recent appointment as Officer Commanding B Squadron. During his extra-Regimental employment, Major Shumka has had the pleasure to serve in multiple positions within the Canadian Forces Leadership and Recruit School at St-Jean-sur-Richelieu, QC including Course Officer, Training Division Administration Officer and Second-in-Command, as well as Officer Commanding Training Reintegration Program. Most recently, he was employed as the Executive Assistant to the Commander 3rd Canadian Division. |
