Rededication of Strathcona Gallery

Captain Ali Raju
The Strathcona Gallery at The Military Museums has been completely re-designed and renovated over a five-year period.  As a result, Lord Strathcona's Horse (Royal Canadians) Regimental Society held a ceremony to re-dedicate the new gallery on the evening of 25 November 2014 at The Military Museums in Calgary.

The gallery went through major renovation. This exciting project was completed in the fall of 2014 and added significant enhancements to the gallery.  The new gallery chronologically displays the Regiment’s contribution from the Boer War to the War in Afghanistan, in order to provide representation of being the only amour regiment in Canada to see action in all of Canada’s foreign conflicts.  The gallery highlights the influence of technology on modern warfare and especially the deployment of tanks and other armoured vehichles. These displays include a replica Sherman tank and Lynx armoured reconnaissance vehicle, an actual Ferret scout car and damaged parts of tanks that were deployed in Afghanistan and are now memorials to fallen soldiers.

The ceremony took the form of a cocktail reception and the Royal Canadian Artillery Band provided excellent background music with the members of the Regiment’s own Pipes & Drums.  Guests were served hors d'oeuvres throughout with complimentary champagne.  The Master of Ceremonies, Major Clayton Gardner, introduced the re-dedication ceremony with Lieutenant-Colonel Josh Major, the Commanding Officer of the Regiment, followed by speeches from Major-General (Retired) Cam Ross, Colonel of the Regiment, and the Member of the Legislative Assembly for Edmonton-Castle Downs, Mr. Thomas Lukaszuk on behalf of the Government of Alberta.  Also, among the guests were Colonel Trevor Cadieu, Commander 1 Canadian Mechanized Brigade Group, members of the Regimental Association, friends of the Regiment, serving officers, the Regimental Sergeant-Major, and Squadron Sergeants-Major.

The ceremony concluded with a scroll signing by Major-General (Retired) Cam Ross; Colonel of the Regiment, Colonel Derek Macaulay; Chairman of the Military Museums Council; and Lieutenant-Colonel Josh Major; Commanding Officer of the Regiment, in order to officially rededicate the Strathcona Gallery.  This was followed by a guided tour of the Gallery by the Curator, Warrant Officer Dave McLeod.  After the formal portion of the ceremony, guests remained to visit the museum and mingle with serving and retired Strathconas.
